Indoor Bike Rack

February 24, 2010

A little less than a year ago, I felt the need to accomplish something… anything! I had just moved in with my sister (Esther) and a few other girls. All of these lovely ladies including myself were avid bike riders. So what could be more perfect than finding a place for the things that we all hold so near to our hearts to sit comfortably while not in use? Yes, I am talking about making a bike rack.

I finally had it, a project for me to accomplish that would actually have some use. So I started to think… what materials would be best? My first thought was welding a bunch of metal together, but I didn’t know how to weld so that wouldn’t work. Next, I thought pvc pipe, although it’s been done before, I felt as though it would not be sturdy enough. I finally decided on using wood, easy to put together and strong. I drew up a plan and estimated the amount of lumber that I would need. Then I ran into another problem, NO CAR! How in the hell was I suppose to pick up all of that wood? None of the roomies had one, and the only other person I could think of had a little sports car that wouldn’t work either. After waiting a little longer, I was lucky enough to have my dad come and visit my sister and I. Thanks to him I was able to get the materials I needed. He was so exceeded to be helping me out, we even got started the next day! Note: a project this big always needs at least two people.

My dad was only able to stay long enough to finish the outer frame, but it was enough. I finished the rest and even stained the wood. I can’t believe how useful this has been. Before we had the bike rack all of our bikes were just leaning against each other. This made the task of grabbing my bike and leaving quite difficult if it wasn’t at the top of the pile.
Now that we have the bike rack, all I have to do is pull my bike forward and go! Here is the end result, I hope you like it.

I do like that. I am very proud of you. It feels very good to make something that you use all the time and looks as nice as that does.
